Comments: ANNOUNCEMENT In early January 2006, the KVA Website will enter a "static" phase pending transition to new administration. During that time the Guest Book will cease to accommodate new messages, although old entries will be available for perusal. The Guest Book will activate again at a later date. It has been gratifying to have participated in the development of www.kvacanada.com from its infancy of 24 pages and 2400 "hits" (visits) to our current 250 pages and nearly 100,000 visits since taking on the task in 1999. Best wishes for a Happy New Year to all who peruse, either regularly or occasionally, the official website of the Korea Veterans Association of Canada. Sincerely, Roly Soper Betty Soper

Are you a Korean War Veteran?: no, my dad was
Comments: My dads name is Curtis Faulkner and I love listening his stories and since he found some new Korean vet friends that he hasn't heard from in years I now hear more. He was to the Korean Vets Remembrance Wall Ceremony in Toronto in July, when he had his medals stolen. I had 2 replaced for him no problem, but I was charged a fee of $45.00 to replace his Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea. Myself I had no problem paying to replace this medal for him but I think it is disgraceful for a vet to have to pay to replace one of his medals that he had earned so respectfully. He also noticed that in a video somewhere a vet had 4 medals on his chest and he was wondering how he could get this 4th medal. He heard that it was being given to Canadian soldiers by the President of Korea if he went there. Since he cannot go there i was wondering if anyone can give me some info as to how I might be able to get it for him. Thanks

Are you a Korean War Veteran?: No. My father was.
Comments: I just found this site by chance, and had a pleasant few hours browsing through all of the guestbook comments. It brought back many memories of my dad's tales of his experiences serving with the PPCLI in Fort Lewis, Japan, and Korea. Since Dad's death last December, I hadn't realized how much I missed his reminiscences of playing hockey on the Imjin Gardens, of "Morgan" the guy with the irreverent salute, of "Rocky", the commander my dad most admired, of breaking ice crossing the Samichon during a Christmas Eve patrol, of Kook Kook and Willie Lump Lump, the American fliers...and the men with whom he served. My son, who is teaching English in Seoul, made a special trek to Pusan on Remembrance Day this year in memory of his grandfather, and to honour his grandfather's request to visit the graves of those Canadians who didn't make it home from Korea to tell their tales. It was a profound experience, which only served to increase my son's respect for the sacrifice made by all who served in Korea. So, all of you vets, keep telling your stories. Your children and grandchildren do remember and value what you did so many years ago!

Comments: HI again, I was here in August, asking if anyone served in Korea with my Dad, as he never spoke about the war and then a few years back he was diagnosed with Alzheimers and of course, was unable to tell me anything. I have been wanting to learn about his service over the last few years, as i am now older and really want to know!! Well, since i last was on here asking if anyone knew my dad, he passed away in Sunnybrook Veterans Long term care on Sept 18th, 2005. Dad was none to his friends as "BUCK" or "BOB" he was with the R.C.R's and was based out of Petewawa, ont. If anyone knows my Dad or served with him in Korea. I would love to hear from you. Thankyou to all the Veterans for serving your country and making it a wonderful place for us to live. God Bless! and thanks to all who make this web site so great!!!

WHile it is nice for me to have them, I think my dad would have wanted to share them with others who were his "family" at that time many are of the equipment, "housing" and "scenery" but quite a few are of individuals and a couple of the Dental Unit Personnel. I was Totally Disgusted To Hear That Curator of The New War Museum In Ottawa Displayed Two Downgrading Insults for all to See. One Towards Korean Veterans, and The Second Towards #1 Airborne Troops in Kosovo. He Actually Commissioned an Artist To Draw This Unjust Pack of Trash for Exhibit. The Curator is Japanese. My personal website is www.keithfannon.netfirms.com When I march in the Dallas, TX, parade on the 11th there will be tears of rememberance for all of you. May God Bless you.

Comments: Great site and I have a poem that I would like to share with all of you after I visited the Wall in Brampton recently: A KOREAN VET- AT THE WALL. His white hair was combed back straight. His eyes were wide and alert, Before he put on his green jacket, He put on his light green shirt. In that far off land called Korea, Much time has passed since 53. Where had he not answered the call, Millions would not be free. Left-Right, Left-Right, Left-Right. To the rhythm of the kettle drum beat. The silence of the autumm air is broken, By the sound of marching feet. They stopped at the Grey Granite Wall, And the bugle began to play. And their eyes fell on the plaques, Of their comrades of yesterday. The padre gave his sermon, It was near the end of day, The veterns with heavy hearts realised, The price some soldiers had to pay. When the ceremony was completed, And the poppies lined the wall They made their final about turn, And marched back straight and tall. Bill Campbell unit 59

Comments: First and foremost, I would like to take this moment to say, "Thankyou", to all our veterans all over the world for their bravery and for the honour that they gave to their country. I am proud of every veteran and want every one to be aware of all the celebrations that are happening all over, for the year of the veteran and I encourage everyone to go out to these celebrations to thank and honour your veterans. I am the daughter of a Korean veteran by the name of Robert Joseph Buck. My dad was stationed in Pettawawa, Ontario. He was in the R.C.R's. I believe he may have been a paratrooper, but am not 100% sure. I also believe he may have been a P.O.W. My problem is that my dad never wanted to talk about the war. Now that I am older, I am more interested to find out about these things. However, my dad has Alzheimers disease now and it is impossible for me to get any info. If anyone out their knows my dad from the army and can tell me anything, I would be so grateful. Thanks for any info, you can give. Once again happy year of the Veteran. LETS CELEBRATE AND HONOUR!! HAVE YOU THANKED A VET TODAY?? God Bless. You can email me with any info you may have at luv2uk@rogers.com

Comments: I served in Signal Corps from 1962-1965 in Kingston. I worked in QM stores with one of the greatest men I have ever met. He was a Korean Vet who saw action with PPCLI and transferred to Sigs where he finished his career. I saw him only a couple of times after I left and have tried many time to locate him. If anyone has heard, of A.J. Smith, a Cpl with Sigs please let me know. If still with us, Smitty would probably be in his middle seventies I think. He was still in the army when I saw him last and he went to the commissionaires in Kingston after retirement. When I last spoke to him, he was living on University St but expected to move in the near future and after that I couldn't locate him. Many thanks

Comments: I've very little information to offer because, like most vets, my uncle didn't speak of his experiences in either war. I'm looking for anyone who may have known Don Grass - no known rank but would have been non-commissioned. He had been with the Hasty P's from '39-45 then re-enlisted for Korea. He was from Belleville and lived there until he died in the 70's. While with the Hasty P's, I believe he was first with Div then Bgd as either a signallman or dispatch rider. I'd certainly like to here from anyone who may have crossed paths with him. Many thanks and will continue to visit this site often.

Comments: Hello to Canadian Korea War Veterans- I shipped out in November 1951 with the first contingent of the Princess Pats Canadian Light Infantry. There were 500 U.S. Army troops and I believe 1500 Canadian troops. I was one of the 500. I had been recalled in September 1950 after having first been released from the Army on June 25th 1950. The day the Korean War started. We, the 500, were loaded on board ship the day before the Canadian troops. There was no fanfare and the ship appeared to be empty. The next day we were allowed to come up on deck of the ship (The General Weigel or the ship General Rodriquez, I don't remember which) and watch the boarding of the Canadian troops. There was a lot of ceremony with newsreel cameras, bag pipes, marching Canadians, with families cheering and waving goodby. In 1950 it was the custom to blouse our uniform pant leg using "rubbers", also known as prophylatics. We didn't call them condrums back then. There was a fair wind blowing and one of our troops floated a blown up "rubber" which sailed gently over the head of the observers on dock. The idea caught on and soon there were numerous "balloons" in the air. The way I tell this story today, which may be some what inaccurate, was that there were 500 balloons, all floating in the breeze. It was a big joke to us. Another event that I recall is the ship hitting the open water of Puget Sound near Seattle and the wave of sea sickness that overtook nearly everyone. The latrines were filled with the sick and those who could not get into the latrines were throwing up in place. As the ship rocked the flow of the vomit would run on deck from side to side. It was like a river flowing and those who didn't watch their step lost their footing and became part of the river. It took 16 days to get to Japan. We stopped in Hawaii where it was raining and hot. We were allowed off ship to march in formation in our winter overcoats. Hula dancers entertained us but it was too hot and muggy to enjoy. We were happy to get back on board. Also, I remember attending church service on board ship which was led by one of the Canadian chaplins. I remember his words. He stated "Some of you men will not be coming back". That was the first time I thought of it in those terms and I thought about it a lot. I wondered what in the world I was getting into. He was right., a lot of men did not come back. The Canadian troops were outstanding. They made a great sacrifice and if it hadn't been for the actions of all of us South Korea would not be a free country today.

Comments: Thank you Veterans - I'm currently an exchange student studying in Seoul, South Korea. One of my courses is about the Korean War. It's a sin that this war, and its veterans, are considered to be "forgotten." Based on the accounts I have read, and the photos I've seen of Korea 50 years ago, you are owed a great deal of gratitude. I've primarily learned about the American forces of the UNC, but upon my return to Canada I intend to learn more about the Canadian contribution. All I can say is thank you.

Comments: I,m very disgusted with the new military museum and its handling of the Korean veterans and the peacekeeper veterans participation and depection in the museum. Why are civilian male and female steering this museum without any military background in their past and with no consultation with people who have this expertise, and have the veterans interest at heart not some hidden anti military agenda.Speaking as a korean veteran who remembers the old sussex dr museum in its crowded condition it was still a display that made me proud. My family close and distant have seen the sussex dr museum and were proud...I would be ashamed to show them this one.I sure hope we as korean veterans and peacekeeping veterans will try and do something to correct this horrendous incorrect despicable display.

Comments: Art, Just seen your entry "in the book". To tell you the truth my memory of hill numbers are becoming dimmer as the years pass by. I shall never forget, (I hope), Hill 355 and 227, nor The hook, but 187, I cannot recall. However I do recall the old dilapidated radio sets which we had to use, the 19 set, originally destined to supply to Russia during the war, so they came with russian names on all the knobs! - and the 62 (or 22?) set which was equally as old. Believe me you HAD to shout to overcome the background noise and continual jamming by the chinese/N.Koreans, in any case we couldn't afford to have you lads going asleep on us, so that was one of our ways of keeping you awake! but seriously how we ever managed to maintain reasonable communications I don't know. I think it was must have been down to the training of signallers and the strict adherance to procedures - such as the early morning netting call! Bye for now. Regards to your fellow vets.

Comments: I served with 42 Mortar Bty RA at the "sharp-end" from Nov 51 to Apr 53. Most of that time we were in support of 25 Cdn Bde. I have done many things, and served with the British Army until 1972, but nowhere did I meet a finer body of men than those fine regiments of the Canadian Army. I can still see the reckless daring and panache of the "Van-Doos" as they excitedly went out on their night patrols, not knowing what lay ahead, but carefree as to the outcome. They must have terrified the enemy! - but what fighters. The same went for all the other canadian regiments, not only tough, but smart and disciplined with it. I was very proud then, and still am today, to have been associated with them. I recall being invited to the Bde Christmas party in 1951, when Brigadier "Rocky" was giving out little presents. I got an Hand warmer, and boy, was that welcome. I believe that party was transmitted by radio back home to Canada. But the best thing I remember was the issue of choc bars and cigarettes, which had apparently been presented by the canadian customs after confiscation at the US border. A great site which has brought back some long forgotten memories. Good Luck to you all.

Comments: I lost my Grandfather, Delbert Jessup, this past July. He was President of Unit 11 in Oshawa, Ontario. And although he shared his love for Korea and his pride in what he had done with me I never took the time to tell him how truly proud of him I was and how truly blessed I was to have him in my life. For all of those who read my message, tell them know what they mean to you, cherish your time with them and make sure they know how much you love them. I Love you Poppa, you are forever in my heart.
