Comments: Having attended the Korea Veterans Association 30th Anniversary which was held in Toronto and having been elevated to the Distinct Order of the Distinguished Service Order together with Comrade Terry Wickens and being that we have a New President and 1st Vice President and being that Terry Wickens and his lovely wife and family took the time and trouble to organize this event and were so honoured, I believe that our President Comrade Dave Davidson who has had the busiest two years in the history of our Association deserves to be recognized in a special way together with his wife Betty . I believe that all the Comrades or Units within this great organization should send personal thanks to Comrade Dave and his lovely wife for a job very well done. So much has been developed where we are concerned and so much accomplished as well. So heat up your pen, Computer or whatever you have on hand and get it all signed up and send it post haste to Comrade Dave with extremely Best Wishes in the Years Ahead as he truly exemplifies what we are all about.

Comments: Sincere condolences from all of the Executive and Members of Unit 19 Sudbury on the passing of Joseph L. Partito who passed away on 18 September 2004. Joe was a real dedicated individual insofar as the Korea Veterans Association went and did a fine job of representing the Comrades at Unit 52 Kitchener/Waterloo. A sad loss as I had just spoken to him at the reunion in Toronto. He will do the Advance Paerty Proud I am sure.

Comments: To all Korean veterans and developers and maintainers of this site....Well Done!!! Many of us that were a younger age but still have vivid memories of Korea---We Do Remember and will continue to do so. My first cousin was Lt. Doug Banton of the RCR's. Killed the night of May 3/4 1953 by the Chinese. Buried at Pusan, South Korea. From books and other writings I found out that Doug was known by some of those that served with him as "The Keener" due his practice of trying to meet with all regimental requirements..work ethics..supportive to the heirachy ...spit and polish..etc until I assume combat dictated otherwise. There have been many positive comments as well as the above and some of those are words that I remember. I thought I might throw in a few also. Doug visited our grandfather's farm (as a young man from the city of Ottawa).I remember him well and used to tease him as he had a pet name for every blessed cow and horse in the barn. It seemed strange to me when he joined the service of his country and desired to uphold his family's military history. His dad passed away a while ago ...Major Donald Banton..48th Highlanders WWII, and his grandfather Tom Banton Boer War and WWI. Both survived their wars. Doug... it seemed strange to me when he didn't...I just assumed he would return. Life lesson for a young man (me).. never to glorify war again. When reading comments from many vets on your site it is obvious that they knew this only too well. I have some momentos from Doug's life, some pictures as a young man full of life, and then of those in uniform on leave and then those in combat gear.I also feel priviledged to have the personal letter that his C.O. sent to his family announcing his death in action (also done by officialdom as well). It really brings the memories back. I take pride in looking over these momentos and some of those of his Dad as well...ensures that We Don't Forget. Thank You Veterans All.

Comments: I just found this site today, my deepest respect for those who developed it and maintain it. For those who may remember my father, CPO Harry (Tommy) Thompson who sailed on the HMCS Haida and HMCS Nootka, he passed away November 9, 1999 at age 69. He was living in Elliot Lake at the time of his death and was a very proud veteran of the Canadian Navy and served during the Korean War. During the dedication of the Wall of Remembrance in the Meadowvale Cemetery, I was moved to tears watching my father march for the first time in my life. A man who normally limped with a bad hip and back, stood tall and straight when the band started up and marched proudly with his fellow veterans. Often he would recount stories from the war, and I have passed them on to my children. Remembering is important and he will never die in my heart. I miss you Dad, more than words can express.

Comments: It’s Troy MacInnis here, seeing if the Patricia’s can help an “old Pat” out. It’s not money or anything like that, but because you guys are the ultimate resource for my project, I would appreciate any help you can give me. I want to gather stories from soldiers that have served whenever/wherever with either the PPCLI or 2Cdo (within the Airborne Regiment) about any good times/funny memories of their own experiences during their time in the Regiment. They could be from the Colonel of the Regiment, all the way to the “no-hook” private. Once I get as many stories as I can, with good taste (or at least a little cleaned up—you get the picture), I plan to compile them into a book. Anywhere we can find some good ones would help. e.g.-the PPCLI association, all 3 battalions, the Parachute Centre, the Airborne association even the PPCLI chat rooms, basically wherever we can reach them. Depending on the response, I can’t promise everyone’s stuff will be used at this point (although I would if I could), but I’m sure every soldier has many memories/stories that others can appreciate. So as a starting point, I’d love any responses from any PPCLI/2Cdo troops, past or present. This is my way of giving back to the place I called my home, my family for many years, and a way for the troops to get a laugh out of eachother, even if they don’t know them personally (because we can all relate to another soldier’s tales). So long for now, and let me know how this sounds. Feel free to call me (780)487-9909 or email with any questions. Thank you, Troy “Grimace” MacInnis C.D. VP!!!

Comments: Great site! I'm looking for any information on F/O Brian J. Mullin, or Charlie Mullin, who served with 5th Air Force in Korea in 1953. In particular, Brian Mullin was supposed to have served in the 36th Fighter-Bomber Squadron (8th Fighter-Bomber Wing) at Suwon, but also may have been in the 4th Fighter-Interceptor Wing at Kimpo starting in June of '53. My uncle was an F-86 Sabre pilot with the 36th FBS and I'm trying to help a relative of the Mullins seek information. My hats off to all Canadians who served with honor in Korea.

Comments: Super web site. I wanted to say a special thanks to J. E. (Jack) LaChance, in particular, for his poem *The Ballad of Kapyong*. My Dad, William J. (Billie) Wyatt, from Bedford, Halifax Co. NS, was 2PPCLI D-Coy. I remember him leaving for Korea in the fall of 1950. Believe they may have stayed in Wainwright for a time, before boarding ship. Recall too, my mother not believing he was going off to war again! [Dad was RCNVR/WWll; East & West Coast/'39-'45] Even though she was ex-RN/WWll, she didn't think they'd take him, as he had a wife, 3 kids, and another on the way! She finally believed it as he was boarding the train in Halifax. They shared a few laughs over that, in later years. ... and ... I remember my Dad coming home. At first it was kind of neat. From Tokyo, he broght us PJs and little chopsticks in little cases. Mine were both red .. still have my 'sticks and case. He taught us to use them and for weeks Mum couldn't get us to use regular utensils. Our Dad rarely spoke of Korea and the odd time he did, he talked about Tommy Prince. Sometimes the starving children. For a long time, he had a hard time sleeping in a bed, though no matter where he slept, it was not a peaceful rest. Many a time he woke up either screaming and/or yelling, poised as though he had his rifle in his hands. For quite a few years we didn't understand why he did this, or the words he'd scream out ... later we knew he was telling some kid to "keep moving/to keep your head down/hit the deck" ... always he worried about *The Kid* ... until, when we got older, we understood that the "y____w b____s" had killed The Kid. Dad carried a photo of my brother and I in his tunic pocket. For years we never knew why he had such a hard time looking at that photo, sometimes with watering eyes. Our mother explained ... what we had taken as water stains was The Kid's blood, which had seeped through Dad's tunic when he held him, as he died. Dad stayed in the Army (post-Korea-RCASC) until 1971. He served a year in Egypt '64-'65. We heard all kinds of stories, mostly humourous, from his Navy days and the RCASC days, but nothing about Korea. We knew what all his medals (now 11) were for and that the little bar with the star was the Presidential Citation. Only thing we ever heard about that was, "The whole battalion got it." Never why they did. Finally a few years ago, I discovered why! Via a book ... "Korea ... the Forgotten War" I think it was. After so many years, things began to make sense ... finally was beginning to understand so many things about my Dad. And as the years passed, his restless sleeps became a little more peacefull. I had the forsight, to explain some things to my own two children about their Poppa. Shortly before my son was being sent to Rwanda in '94, my Dad spoke to him privately. Two days after David returned home, he went to see my Dad, alone for several hours. He did the same when he returned from Bosnia '98, then Kosovar '99. Only my husband knows what they talked about and he told me not to ask, 'cause I didn't want to know. My Dad passed away Monday 21 April 2003. We miss him more than he could have ever imagined, but I'd like to think he has met up with *The Kid* again ... only wish we here knew his name ... he was only about 19 years old. RIP Popeye. Again, thank you to Jack LaChance and thanks to all Veterans, everywhere. LEST WE FORGET

Comments: | | | Inbox THANK YOU BOOK FOR OUR VETERANS Hi my name is Kim Shergold I live in Corbeil Ont. Canada. I decided awhile back that I wanted to do something for our Veterans, to show them that the Canadian Public and people across the world will never forget what they did to give us the freedom we enjoy today. From that came the idea of asking the public to send me their THANK YOU LETTERS to our Veterans, to be compiled into a book of war sketches, poems for our Veterans , photo's and information of a Veteran you personally know. Personal stories from our Veterans and their families, also war bride stories. I feel with the above combination it can only bring a better understanding for our Veterans to know we will never forget them, and for us through their stories to understand why we can never forget the sacrifices they made for us. There are people who are rarely mentioned such as bandsman that brought some happiness even if for a short while. Nurses, Doctors, Medics, Journalist etc. I could go on for ever. I hope with this book it may bring old friends together again, and help children(now adults) looking for information on Fathers they maybe never had the chance to get to know because they gave the ultimate sacrifice-their life. For those who agree to help us on this journey I ask that you also send a letter giving us permission to use your article in our book. Please pass this onto your family, friends, schools local newspapers. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank You. Yours Truly Kim Shergold One Proud Canadian e-mail moon_baby2@hotmail.com or Kim Shergold Hwy. 17 East R.R.2 Corbeil Ont. Canada POH - 1KO 1- 705 - 752 - 2037 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ THIS IS FOR ALL OUR VETERANS First I would like to personally send you a HUGE THANK YOU for the freedom I enjoy today. I shudder to think what Canada would be like if it were not for our Veterans. I know we can never repay you for the sacrifices you have made for us and are still doing till this day. Words can never really say how I feel in my heart about our Veterans. On November 11th the tears of love and sorrow fall from Heaven above for those who have given their life and for those who still go through their own private hell.I can only hope as the years pass your pain lessens. Next time you feel a raindrop touch your cheek, remember it is someone saying Thank You for the sacrifices you made for complete strangers. As you know their will always be rain and with each sparkling tiny drop that hit's the earth brings beauty & love for our Veterans. Raindrops will never stop neither will the remembrance for our Veterans. You are etched in our hearts forever. By: Kim Shergold Proud to be a Canadian

Comments: Hello, My father served in the Korean War, however, he passed away at the the age 47. I was only 13 yrs.old and have no idea what battalion he belonged to or when he served. He never spoke to his kids (all 8 of us) of his time served, probably because he wanted to protect us from what he had experienced. My mother is still alive and well , but she offers no info. either because of the hardships. His name was Kenneth Lloyd Watts(went by Lloyd). If anyone out there has information of when he served and what battalion he belonged to or even has pictures, it would be extremely appreciated. I almost have no memory of father and would love a piece of his past. If he was still alive, I know he would be apart of the Veterans Association and would have been able to share his experiences with other Veterans. Please help!! Regards, Dee Dee Eurig

Comments: This morning I recieved messages from three veterans of The Korean War. One of them was involved in the same action in which my uncle was killed. As it turns out, most of my information was incorrect. My Uncle was killed in action against Chineese forces on the night of November 5/6 1951 by mortar fire. It was his second night in the line and he was twenty-two years old. He was with 1st Btn. PPCLI not 2nd and he is buried at Pusan. I'm told that the cemetary there is beautiful and well cared for. I never knew my uncle as he was killed almost two years before I was born however the need to know more about him has been nagging at me since I was a young man. I don't mind telling you that the tears are streaming down my face as I write this message. I will pass this information on to my daughter who is now eighteen. My uncle has never been forgotten and I will see to it that he never is. Thanks to all of you who served and God Bless.

Comments: I am sending this to all veterans of all wars. It is unfortunate that there are Canadians who look at us as a bunch of bums. I went to a KVA meeting this fall and my neighbor came in my yard and asked where I was ,my wife said he is at KVA meeting and he stated that veterans are nothing but a bunch of bums living on government pensions. this same person has not had a job in the six years I have lived next to him.this guy plays guitar at local taverns and he was getting a little slack for work, so I said why not play for the Legions ,he said they do not pay enough money. well he must be getting hard up ecause he is playing Legions now.My point is how can he make money from the veterans and put them down.now I will say this I am a member of the KVA and I am second vice commander of the Korea War Veterans International in Syracuse New York of which Les Peate our first vice president is first vice commander at KWVI in Syracuse. I say if this idiot made this comment to American Korea vets they would have his testicals for book-ends. I sent a letter to Lindsay Legion and they say he is no long welcome there. I sent a letter to my Legion #519 and said if he plays here I will transfer to another Legion .how can a person be critical of vets and smile while he takes there money.enough already.there is an ex sailor of the Nootka. Cal Calebert who would like to know if there is a William Benny Grant out there from Ottawa area possible leading seaman. Cal is a member of KVA unit #71 Lindsay.

If anyone has any information-pictures, stories etc on him, I would be most grateful if you would share. He retired from the military and was working in Burnaby, B.C. when he was in a car accident and was killed in 1966. He had married a Lucie Linnamire from Northern Germany (as far as we know) and they had one son, David who would now be approx. 48 years old. When my uncle died, my mother lost contact with my aunt. If anyone can give me any info on her or David's whereabouts, itwould be greatly appreaciated. Thanks!

Comments: I could not resist being the first to leave a message on the new guest book which bids farewell to 2003 and heralds in the new year. I greatly appreciated all of the efforts made by many Korean War Veterans and by Webmaster Roly Soper in spreading the word throughout the country about the Veterans Tribute and Monument Dedication Ceremony in Ottawa. It was inspiring to see so many wonderful Veterans from all parts of Canada converge in the National Capital to receive public tribute from the Prime Minister. The CBC 2-hour coverage of the event was excellent and those Veterans who opted to purchase a copy of the videotape at cost will have a good memento to pass to their heirs. I remember being behind the front on New Year's Eve, 1952. I hooked up with some A echelon people and visited the Royal Tank Regiment where we were able to purchase cases of Asahi beer. The RTR's RSM came raging into the tent while we were singing and ordered all Canadians off of his base. One of our fellows jeered him and I'm afraid embarassed him by tracking him with a flashlight. He also yelled at him "Your Regiment heaves!" I have no idea what it meant but it sounded most derogatory. We staggered up the road with a case of beer. I hissed the others to silence, advanced on a wide shoulder of the road where there was a tangle of shrubbery. I had just come from the lines and my nerves were still highly tuned. I had heard rustling in the bushes. I leveled the Enfield and said that if I did not hear somebody speak to me immediately I would open fire. Out came two whining Patricias pleading for their lives. They were two fellows from my own rifle company. They had two cases of beer and although they were rightly enraged they decided to eat their pride and stick with us. A little further along we came on a staggering, grumbling man who challenged us. I recognized the voice of my long time friend, Private Leo Kerwin from St. John's, who had given up his rifleman's job to become an RP at A echelon. He was very drunk and wearing his pistol. When I told him that we had "captured" two Patricias with contraband beer Leo put them under arrest. He said he would let them off if they gave up the beer. He was very serious but we were only having fun and letting him act his policeman's role. We helped him along the road a ways when we saw a lighter flick on the far side of the minefield wire. The fellow who had jeered the RTR's RSM bellered loudly, demanding identification. A Kiwi voice gave us a very unfriendly response. The same man crossed the minefield wire and strode for the light. We followed in single fire. There were two Kiwi gunners, one very young and very big and the other very old and very small. Their names were "Lofty" and "Typhoon." Their mates had ditched them and they had gone into the field to gather foliage. They were just starting their bonfire when we came on them. I chastized them for being in a minefield. They countered that Canadians were as stupid as they come. When I asked why they said that they said insultingly that they didn't know they were in a minefield but we did and came in anyhow! We soon added our wooden beer cases to the conflagration and had flames rising some ten or twenty feet high. More Patricias came shuffling down the road and yelled out challenges. We countered that if they had the guts to cross the wire they could join us. Everyone did. We soon had a whole section of Patricias around the fire. "You know they will shell us," the oldest Kiwi mumbled. "Let them do it!" said the cocky Patricia who had insulted the RTR's RSM. We all began singing, waiting for the New Year's Eve midnight barrage. But we were nearly out of beer by 2330 and decided to head for the echelon on the double. There was more beer there and we wanted to join hands in celebration when the guns sounded. We gave the two Kiwis what beer we had left, some cigarettes and other stores and left them in their melancholy next to the smouldering ashes. They were resigned to die in the shells they thought would surely come for them. It is comical now, but they sincerely believed they would buy the farm that night. But we didn't. We did join hands around the pot bellied stove in Lance Corporal Wally Polkosnik's C Company stores tent. We sang so loudly we apparently missed the big guns. One of those present was Roy Blackburn who is now gone. Leo Kerwin is gone now, too. Wally Polkosnik lives in Edmonton and I have met with him at two PPCLI reunions in recent years. Wally is also a good friend of Roly Soper, who was also at those reunions. It must be very cold in Korea now in the place where we were at. It must be colder still along the Saimichon Valley and up the little Valley that leads to the Warsaw and then to the Hook. The winds are probably blowing constantly, laying the same chill into the air, the ground, the lives of men like they did when we served there. The ghosts of 50 years ago make their nightly patrols, keeping watch over the young Korean soldiers who sneer at each other from both sides of the valleys. Maybe someday the hatred will end and they will begin to demine and relcaim the DMZ. Meanwhile the DMZ continues to preserve those places where we were at. The same entrenchments, bunkers, rusted wire are where they were when the shooting stopped. The foliage of summer dies with winterset and one can see for miles up the vallies by day. The shale and clay on the slopes where we fought are still filled with spent bullets, shrapnel chards, although bullet casings and charger clips have rusted away. There are grenades in the soil and mines and likely discarded weapons, too, but the ROK troops do not stray from carefully worn paths to explore for them. The slopes and the valley floors are thick with mines. No doubt the moon lights everything with the same eerie glow when the snow clouds part. I did not know then that those valleys and those hills would stay with me for 50 years. I know that, as with many others who served there and in other parts of Korea, I will take those places into 2004 with me as well. I know that I will take those I served with into 2004 as well, both those still with us and those who lost their lives in Korea and those who have gone since. My very best wishes for a happy new year to all Korean War Veterans, everywhere! Vince Courtenay

VP!!!

Comments: i am looking for anyone who served in either Korea or Germany who served between February 29 1952 and May 16 1960. He was discharged May 16 1960. I am hoping to find people who knew a DONALD ALBERT BROWN from Toronto Ontario. He is my father. I am hoping to find people who may know him to contact him to bring back some memmories for him. I don't know much about his military life unfortunatly, just that he wrote to his mother quite often (Florence Kemp or Brown) My father had a tatoo on his forarm and he was a tall skinny guy with glasses. I would know what he looked like if I saw a photo of him. His brother (My uncle) GORDEN BROWN was killed (in germany i think) When a military vehicle over turned. NIETHER my father or my uncle served in a war.

Comments: I was checking out sites on the Korean war and came across this sie. My uncle, George Langor (Langer) of Clarenville, Newfoundland was a Korean vet.
